GENEALOGY

This section of my website covers the genealogy of both the DeLoach family on my father's side and the Hughey family on my mother's side. I hope you enjoy!

THE DELOACH FAMILY

When I was in high school, Mom and Dad passed along some genealogical information to me that came from G.L. Mason - one of our relatives. Weather 1

G.L.'s documents went back five or six generations, and it inspired me to search further to discover the history of our DeLoaches within the United States.

I'm indebted to G.L. for his efforts, and the inspiration they provided for my research.

The information below represents a great deal of investigation and numerous sources. Only with the continued introduction of genealogical information to the internet was I able to piece together some of the critical gaps in our family tree.

I had been told that the link had been lost in a court house fire that connected our immediate clan, going back four or five generations, with the DeLoaches that first landed in the United States. However, late one night around 1:00 AM, I was chasing the connection using the maiden names of some of the females in our distant past and found, for a lack of better terms, the missing link. As one can imagine, it was all I could do to contain my excitement at that late hour.

Happy reading!

Forrest Hutcheson ("Hutch") DeLoach III

FIRST GENERATION 1. Michel DES LOGES was born about 1645 in France or England. He died about 1710 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He was buried about 1710 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Listed as Michaell Deloges in the passenger list sailing from Bristol, England. Came to America as servants to Foreign Plantations. Ref: Bristol and America; a Record of the First Settlers in the Colonies of North America From Records of the City of Bristol, England by R.S. Glover, 1929. In "The Bristol Registers to Servants to Foreign plantations 1654-1689", by Peter Wilson Coldham, page 196, Michaell Deloge is listed as a servant to Charles Taplady in Virginia for four years, beginning 24 Aug 1663. When Michael DesLoges arrived in America, he was an unmarried man of about 19 years of age. He settled in Isle of Wight County, where he became engaged as an apprentice tailor under Charles Taplady. It is conjectured that his parents and/or grandparents owned and operated a tailoring establishment in France or England, and that Michael served an apprenticeship in that establishment before coming to Virginia. As a newcomer to the colony, he received a grant of 50 acres of land, but its location has not been determined. In about 1668, Michael married Jane Griffith, the only child of Rowland Griffith who, if not a native of Wales, was of Welsh descent. On 9 April 1663, Governor Francis Morrison of Virginia granted to Rowland Griffith 765 acres of land situated on Blackwater River in Isle of Wight County. By his will, dated 9 August 1671, Rowland Griffith gave "all of my estate to Jane DesLoges, my only daughter and now wife unto Michael DesLoges, taylor".

Michael and/or Jane might have died shortly before or during 1719. The number of children born to them is not known. There were probably one or more daughters who married, but due to loss of records, cannot now be identified as members of the family. Also, there were probably one or more children who died before reaching maturity. However, records of the time which escaped loss or destruction furnish circumstantial evidence (which has been accepted as proof) that they were the parents of three sons who grew to maturity, married, and left surviving children.

He was married to Jane GRIFFITH (daughter of Rowland GRIFFITH and Mrs._Rowland (GRIFFITH))about 1671 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. THE HUGHEY FAMILY

Patty obtained a subscription to ancestry.com about a month ago and has really been enjoying researching her family tree. She really got addicted to it and stayed up until 5 AM one night while I was on the road.

Weather 1

I was surprised she found it that interesting until I gave it a try myself. Since I had already researched my father's side the "old fashioned" way and had only given a minor effort to my mom's side, I decided to give the service a test drive on her side of the family.

It didn't take but a few minutes until I clearly understood her addiction. I've been spending some evening hours since digging back into my mom's side of the family. While I have much more information than can be efficiently shared here, I thought I would at least share the primary line of the Hughey name.

I discovered that the Hugheys were from Donegal, Ireland. They arrived in the US sometime in the mid 1700's and settled in Union County (Spartanburg?) South Carolina. It appears there may have been a minor change in the spelling of the last name (Hughley to Hughey) unless it is simply a typo in the records.

James Hughley (correct spelling?) was born in Donegal, Ireland in 1690 and had a son named John in 1725 who was also born there in Donegal. John traveled to the US and lived, as mentioned, in Union County South Carolina. He may have changed the spelling of his last name, for one reason or another, since it is recorded as Hughey.

Here is the line all the way up to the present generation:

Donegal, Ireland

James Hughley (1690 - ) born in Donnegal, Ireland

John Hughey (1725 - ) born in Donnegal, Ireland - married to Mary (Last Name?)

Joseph Hughey (1768 - 1829) & Hannah Noland (1759 - 1852)

Ephriam George Hughey (1809 - 1890) & Sarah Ann Jones (1817 - 1865)

Meridith K Hughey (1865-1903) & Annie L Williams (1872 - 1903)

Henry Earl Hughey (1897) & Sarah Ruth Bogle Hughey

Janice Ellen Hughey DeLoach (1929 - 1998) & Forrest H. DeLoach JR (1929 - )

Hutch DeLoach (1954 - )

Unfortunately, there are no males in the immediate family to carry on with the Hughey name...
