Rib Pain

Rib Pain

Written Sunday - 09/29/24 07:00 AM

Well, as I type we're about to put a ribbon on September. As I publish, the ribbon is on and we're making an entrance into October of 2024.

I've got a feeling that I cracked (if not broke) a rib when I fell against the bed-side table while trying to fix the corner of the bottom sheet on the bed before it was time to get up. The pain associated with breathing is finally gone but laying down or the ab exercise in day #2 or my regimen still talk to me.

I'm pretty sure I didn't break anything such that part of a bone is floating loosely in my rib cage. On the other hand, there's a real chance that I cracked something. The discomfort went far too long to just be associated with a some type of bruise.

On the other hand, I just went to AI to ask about a bruised rib and the symptoms are exactly what I have experienced. Maybe I didn't crack a rib as I initially thought. Who knows?

There certainly wasn't enough concern to generate a doctor visit. From all I've heard and read in the past, most cures involve a patient wait if not some level of wrap.

Time 2

Written Saturday - 09/28/24 07:35 AM

I can't believe how this year has flown by. We nearing the end of September, I've already hit 70, and we're just over a month away from the big vote.

It won't be long before spring arrives and Patty and I travel to Germany to visit the Snow family.

Where has the time gone? 'I have no idea' - is the answer I would offer, but it certainly is flying by!

They (whomever 'they' is) say time passes faster as you get older. That doesn't necessarily seem fair, but it certainly is a fact - at least from this guy's limited perspective.

I've written on this idea before but it still seems to loop around and come back for a fresh visit. To say that I should have spent more time pondering the idea when it first arrived makes little sense to me.

It's not something that demands a revisit. It's just an idea that comes to mind.

It's just that the faster time seems to fly, the more tbe idea comes to mind. Patty and I speak of it more often than we ever did before. And there's a good reason for that.

Internet Outage

Written Saturday - 09/28/24 04:15 PM

Last night, we had a power outage. Let me correct myself, last night we had an internet outage. It took up all of the evening and some of this morning.

We also had some rain so I can only guess that the outage was related. Water most certainly crept in somewhere because they couldn't find the outage last night. It was later this morning, after everything dried out, that they found and corrected the problem.

My guess is that they couldn't find the problem in the mist and rain last night. That's why I'm figuring things had to dry out and the rain had to quit before they were able to make a determination as to the problem. Just a wild guess.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have a person on call in that kind of operation. By the time the problem showed up, I'm guessing that the techs had already called it a night.

I'm quite sure that is the case for the person who manages the call center. It's telling that no further communications occured until 8:00 AM this morning, and even that was a notification that the problem had not been corrected.

Hurricane Helene 2.0

Surge2

Written Friday - 09/27/24 07:45 AM

I'm far from my expertise in offering this post. That's because I've never seen the type of condition that's being offered here.

How and why is there measurable storm surge after a hurricane has already passed by? I don't know but that is exactly what is forecast.

My uninformed and uneducated guess is that this is the storm surge that remains after the initial storm surge of a greater level. Again, I've never heard of this type of situation so it is definitely offered from an uninformed perspective, but this is what is described in the forecast.

It seems we missed out on most of the rain that was in the forecast for this area. Helene landed further to the east than was expected and the surge that resulted in that area was beyond anything I've ever heard of or seen in my lifetime.

The rain gauge shows 1.5 inches fell last night. That's a far cry from the forecasted rain for this area, but to be honest I'm amazed that we even received that much rain considering Helene's path.

I'm so glad that God called us out of that area but am lifting up those who remained down that way. Lord, please help them all for it is difficult to imagine what they are experiencing at this time.

Hurricane Helene

Helene

Written Thursday - 09/26/24 08:05 AM

It's been a while since I have had hurricane concerns. I suppose that's because we no longer live in a hurricane zone.

However, and that's a big 'however', with my new-found empathy for those in the zone, or still in the zone as with our former neighbors and Connie Bryant, all I need to do is remember the stress in my own life when we returned after a hurricane wondering if we still had a home to which we might return.

Michael did some serious damage and left us without a staircase or power for 10 days, but at least we had a place to lay our head. That's a lot more than some folks found when they returned to the location of their former homes, which were little more than a pile of rubble that needed to be moved street-side.

Addendum:

Surge

Written Thursday - 09/26/24 08:25 AM

I don't think I feared the results of the hurricane as much as I was concerned for the results from the storm surge. That's what concerned me most often.

I remember during hurricane Michael watching an online display of a coast guard water level indicator not too far from our home and remember that it quit working when the water reached 7 feet. You can imagine my concern in not knowing what was going on after it reached 7 feet.

Our second level on our 3 level home (up on stilts) was 10 feet above ground and the water went up 9 feet above ground. Everything we had in the second floor storage made it just fine.

However, our fishing gear and some of the yard gear in first floor storage was gone, as was the built-in storage shelter and the stairs leading up to our home as I mentioned earlier. The first floor of our elevator was also wiped out and we wound up having to remove the elevator in favor of a lift outside the house.

We added a floor to each level of the shaft and converted those areas to storage. We had to sacrifice the shaft on the first floor due to the level of damage that was sustained at that location. As I recall, having to pay for all of that clean-up and removal was not fun either.

Special word of thanks to Bryan Carter and his sons for their quick work in replacing out stairs and their contributions to the seawall project much later on.

Years and years ago there were 10 episodes of a show on MTV. I watched them all and purchased 4 episodes that I really liked.

Yesterday I watched 2 of those episodes and I intend to watch the other 2 today. The show was so real and so good.

It really made an impression on me. Even though I has already seen the show and knew what to expect, I still cried like a baby as I watched some off it. The stories were that good and that real or honest.

When the folks broke down into their small groups, they shared from the heart. It was touching to watch and I really felt a part of what was going on.

They also did an exercise that was exactly what happened in the book The Freedom Writers Diary. I wondered if one copied the other due to how effective the exercise seemed to be.

I have to imagine that the School Principals, of the schools involved in the project, were risk takers. They were letting people come into their schools and get involved with the students in a way that could have a measurable impact.

And yet they let them in. Based on what the students were saying, it sounded like some of them had the benefit of talking to others in other schools to get an idea of what to expect (e.g. crying, sharing, etc.)

I would imagine that most of the principals did something similar. Only a small few of them probably put their schools up to this potential risk literally flying blind into it.

Still, it was clear that those students really had no idea what to expect or how serious things would get. I give the students credit for with what they knew ahead of time, they still went along for the ride. And what a ride it was!

Victor Davis Hanson. I'm watching (on YouTube) and reading (on Audible) a lot of his stuff and have a great respect for his level of knowledge.

I watched a lengthy video podcast recently on YouTube (The Way I Heard It) and was introduced to the depth of another guy with whom I am familiar. Mike Rowe!

Wow. The guy was hanging with Victor Davis Hanson and held his own very nicely. It was a program that was definitely worth my time.

This is Mike Rowe. Obviously his podcast is called 'The Way I Heard It.' And, as I mentioned, he was hosting Victor Davis Hanson on his show.

I saw Mike on another very interesting episode of his podcast with Riley Gaines. It was interesting to hear that they both hate losing more than they like winning. In other words, they are both admittedly highly competitive.

The episode I focused on with Victor Davis Hanson was a loosely arranged episode (I get the feeling that's the way Mike's show runs) and they spent a lot of time talking about the economics of farming, since Dr. Hanson is such an expert in that area.

It was interesting to hear Dr. Hanson describe his raisin operation and being put out of business by a non-USA operation that was surviving off of a government provided subsidy that reduced the lot price on raisins from $140 down to $40.

I must admit I was on the side of the economist (Milton Freidman) until I heard Dr. Hanson's side of things. Now I'm not sure where I find myself on the matter.

I'll have to give some thought to what I heard.

What a beautifully encouraging verse from a beautiful book in the bible. That's just one of the reasons I like it.

I find peace and strength from the ideas that He is with us and that He is our God. Like I said, quite an encouraging verse.

This will be my final bible verse for a time. Not because these are the most important verses or my favorites or anything like that, but because I want to do it all again sometime with some new and equally important verses from the bible.

There are so many good verses from which to choose. And there is so much power in the Word of God. I look forward to doing this all again sometime.

One of the things I like about this particular post is the picture. It reminds me of Patty's and my prayer at night and the fact that we hold hands during that time.

If I'm still battling my cough, as has been the case lately, whether it's before a meal or just before we turn over to go to sleep, Patty will do the praying. If I'm not coughing, Patty allows me the honor of praying for our meal and then we both pray at bedtime.

It's such a wonderful way to end the day, spend time before God, and thank Him for so many good things He has done in our lives.

Written Sunday - 09/22/24 07:45 AM

This morning I woke Patty up with a (literal) bang. I was trying to fix the bottom sheet on my side and fell.

I need to be more careful. The falls are coming more often and usually they are a result of not being careful.

I'm getting older and being more careful is a requirement. It wasn't earlier but is now.

This wonk factor is tough to live with but being careful is now a requirement if I am to survive. It's fortunate that I enjoy things that allow me to be seated.

A morning run and workout get the day started right. Even then and there I need to be careful. Blogging, Politics, and a movie or two seem to fill much of the rest of my day. I have to get up from time to time and being careful then and there is still a requirement.

When I was in Middle School (known as Junior High back then) I was asked to read a passage from the bible before a school assembly.

I read Psalms 1:1-3. I thought it might be good to start at the beginning of a popular book. I had no idea that God was speaking to me, even back then.

That passage has since become my favorite and is so meaningful to me. It speaks to the hearts of all men and serves as a critical guide for each of us.

I wondered if I had already shared this story but a search indicated I had not. Well, it was time. Thank you Lord for prosperity!

I was thinking about how often we speak to well-meaning people who have no idea of what they believe.

And, I was thinking of the above verse and how important it is that we understand scripture and are not leaning on our own understanding. It's an easy thing to do such that we remain in charge and are making all of the decisions.

It's a dangerous place to live. God help me to always lean into your Word.

Eph 2:8,9

Written Wednesday - 09/18/24 07:10 AM

This is a powerful verse. It takes away any opportunity we have for saving ourselves due to our goodness or for any other thing that we can accomplish.

It places the benefit of our salvation right where it belongs - in the hands of God. For He died upon a cross and took our sin so that we, by his grace, might receive salvation.

And, as He said, He rose on the third day. And our risen savior was met and witnessed by so many. Because of this, there can be no dispute that He did what He said He would do and is who He said He was, is therefore God, hears our prayers, and is worthy of our worship and our praise.

I'll begin with a challenging verse. Micah 6:8. The verse can be seen in the image above and it taken from the N.I.V. bible.

That verse challenges everything in me but is a wonderful description of my wife and her amazing attributes. For she is just, merciful, and walks humbly with our God.

She is an amazing example of that verse in my life. I'm so glad to have her in my life as a beautiful soul after which to model those attributes.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. I fell on the treadmill today and skinned up both knees as a result.

There's no pain associated with either. Just some skinned up pride that's been associated with my ability to stay upright on the treadmill.

Those two milers at an 8:30 pace are just too much for this old guy. My knees were buckling with a lack of strength on that last half mile and I should have quit while I was behind.

Well, I can think of all sorts of reasons not to quit and they all kicked in there at the end of the run. As a result came the fall to my knees on a moving treadmill and the skinned up knees.

Oh well. More battle scars to add to the mix.

Well, yesterday was a big day and that makes this the day after. It's actually the first day in a series towards Patty's big Seven-O, which occurs in late January of 2025.

With all that has been going on in the real world, that picture that I used for this post could be a precursor for things to really happen. There's a lot of people who believe we are destined for a nuclear WWIII. God help us if we go that route.

If history is any indicator, all we need to start down that path is a Democrat in the 2024 presidential office. I fear they are both power hungry and oblivious to the realities of the world. That makes them real candidates to push the button.

Well, it was bound to get here sometime. And here it is.

The big Seven-O. It has finally arrived.

With my balance challenges I feel every bit of it. But otherwise, not so much.

I'm grateful that I can sit and carry on just fine. I'm also grateful that I can complete my runs even when holding onto the treadmill and shorter distances have to be involved. I'm pleased that the pace is still way up there.

I'm also grateful that I can complete my weight lifting workouts. Even when standing is involved, they don't seem to be much of a much.

It's when I generally just stand up that the problems show up. And when I stand up they do indeed show up. Are things getting worse or am I just the equivalent of a stubborn mule about exercise? Honestly, it's difficult to tell.

Well, tonight's the big night. The presidential debate has finally arrived. As I write it's still ahead. As I publish, it's all over and we know more about the result, although perhaps not more about Kamala. We'll see...

It's slated to start at 9 PM in the east which means it will be a comfortable 8 PM start time here. I can deal with that.

I'm going to make a wild prediction that the presidential race is going to be a slam dunk for Trump. Even (and especally) with the media bias, I'm counting on the American people to do the right thing and favor the agenda items that fall in the Trump strong suit when casting their vote.

It may not be the wild A$$ run-away that I'm predicting, but I still think it will be a sizeable defeat. People don't want to sound too confident in case it turns out to be a close race, but I just cannot believe it's going to be that close, espesially with the way Kamala Harris has responded to things and particularly the way the media frames the stories.

Even Fox News touts the closeness of the presidential race despite a few of the talking heads who refuse to go there, like Jesse Watters and Greg Gutfeld.

Well, the conservatives clearly felt it was a biased presentation by the ABC media. I agree. For example, the fact checking all went one way only. That's not good or fair.

And much to my regret, DJT had to defend himself and as a result he looked like he was always on the defense, which he was. On the other hand, Kamala was able to play into the 'I'm a kind person' routine which will certainly earn her points with the left.

It doesn't look so good for the conservative party on this one. Hope I'm wrong and that the left can see through the media bias.

Keeping up a blog can be interesting when I have to look back and see what I wrote about a big incident like 911. And so I went searching.

Truth is, between 2022 and 2023 I wrote about all that happened on 911. There's honestly not much more to say that hasn't already been said in terms of my experience with the event.

I've gone back and watched some of the YouTube videos of what happened that day. Truthfully I see those videos very differently. I see less of the technical and more of the human side of things.

I listened to a young woman who cried out in real pain when she saw the second tower go down. Her only concern was for the people who died in that event.

Because I have trained myself to look at such things with a very different perspective, I could feel the pain she was declaring. In the old days of long ago, I would have missed that completely. But not anymore.

I had the opportunity to meet Forrest (again) at a Thanksgiving dinner hosted by Josh and Elizabeth a few years ago. I had already seen him back when Johnny was still alive but this was my first opportunity to see him in his new environment. It seemed to suit him very well.

I just finished the Audible Online book - The Freedom Writers Diary. It was definitely worth an addendum here.

It was 142 diary entries by various students from room 203 at Wilson High School under the guidance of Erin Gruwell - their new teacher.

The book was inspiring beyond description. What that teacher and those students accomplished was something really special. In the face of insurmountable ods they delivered a touching story of success where only failure had been expected.

It was wonderful to take a sneak peek inside the minds of those students as they walked the walk of a set of very difficult journeys. It was sad to see the story come to an end, just as it must have been for those who did the writing.

I watched the movie before reading the book, but as I've heard far too often in other cases, the movie didn't even scratch the surface of all that the book had to offer. All I can say is, wow!

I learned something about Audible Book Credits. It was a new twist for me.

Audible Book Credits are paid out at the time of day when the original deal was made. In other words, Audible Book Credits arrive in my account on the same day and time where the account was set up.

Unfortunately for me, that means that the credits arrive in my account sometime around 4:30 PM or so. Not because that's the time I set up my account.

That happens to be the time I reset my account to get rid of a book that I didn't much care for. The guy who did the credit in my account (to pay me back for the book I didn't want) made the change to my account around that time.

So now, that's the time of day my new credits arrive each month in my account. Late afternoon sometime near 4:30 PM. If I get interested, I'll have to check it out and see exactly when it arrives. We'll see if I get that interested in the details of my account.

Reading From the Heart

I love writing from the heart. But now I'm beginning to love reading from the heart.

My definition of reading from the heart is reading a work where someone has poured out their heart in writing it. That's what Reading From the Heart is to me and I've come across a large body of work in Audible that really fits that definition.

Some of the works are very professional and priced accordingly. Others are from new writers (like me) and the prices are right. I assume the lower price is a statement in itself from the writer and hope that I will find this to be the case.

You know, kind of like a diamond in the rough. At least that's my hope anyway.

Well, today's the day. I earn another Audible book credit and get to use it to purchase The Freedom Writer's Diary.

It's one of those books that I had been wanting to consume for a long time. I just hadn't known it until very recently.

How does that happen? I have no idea. But it has indeed happened and I'm smack in the middle of it.

I'm going to consume a book I've been wanting to consume. I just didn't know it until recently. So here I go!

I've listened to two Audible originals. First was the classic 1984 by George Orwell and the most recent was After You've Gone a mystery whodunit story by Margot Hunt.

Both were free books. And both were excellent reads.

I'm still waiting on my next credit due in a few days so I can purchase The Freedom Writer's Diary by students of Erin Gruwell. I watched the movie recently and can't believe it's taken me this long to pursue the diary.

Getting Ahead

Get Ahead

Written Saturday - 08/31/24 07:00 AM

As I write it's Saturday the 31st of August. As I publish, it's the first of September. Major lesson learned about trying to get ahead preparing the month end.

There's just too much to keep up with to try and do it all ahead of time. That's why I don't intend to do this (get ahead!) again.

The file swap gets very tricky and with so much to keep up with it's near about impossible to keep things in good order. Oh my, this is a real headache.
